Extend your stay in Canada longer
Here are the documents you need to enter Canada as a visitor:
- Temporary resident visa (visa for visitors)
- via electronic travel authorization
- and valid passport
If you plan to stay in Canada longer as a visitor, you must apply for a visitor record. This is not a visa.
A visit record
- It enables you to stay longer in Canada as a visitor
- With a new expiry date
When to apply for a visitor record
Before your current status expires, you must apply for a visitor record. If you’re not sure when your status expires, find out how long you can stay in Canada.
Leaving and returning to Canada
Document that gives you status as a visitor in Canada and allows you to stay longer. This does not mean you can re-enter Canada after leaving.
You need a valid entry document, such as a visitor visa or eTA, to enter Canada if you intend to travel outside Canada or the United States.
Who can apply for a visitor record?
Visitors who wish to keep a visitor record do so
- Visit Canada as a visitor or extend their stay
- To change their permit type
- From a study permit to a visitor's record
- From a work permit to a visitor's record
No matter if you entered Canada with a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA). As a visitor, if you want to extend your stay in Canada, you will need a visitor's record.
When to apply
If you wish to extend your stay as a visitor or change your status (from an international student or worker to a visitor, for example), apply at least 30 days before your current status expires.
Expiration date for your status is
- The stamp in your passport (not the date on your visitor visa).
- You have six months from the day you entered Canada if you do not have a stamp in your passport
- or study permit
- for work
- visa (if you've already extended your stay)
