Definition of inadmissibility

There are some individuals who are not allowed to enter Canada. They are inadmissible under Canadian immigration law.

An immigration officer will determine whether you may enter Canada when you:

  • Request a visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA)
  • At the point of entry.

You may be denied entry to Canada for a number of reasons, such as security, criminal or medical reasons.

You may be inadmissible

You will not normally be allowed to enter Canada if you are inadmissible. In the event that you have a valid reason for traveling to Canada that is justified under the circumstances, we may grant you a temporary resident permit.

It is possible to overcome your criminal inadmissibility if you have committed or been convicted of a crime.

You may be found inadmissible for the following reasons:

You could be found inadmissible for a number of reasons, such as:

  • Security reasons
  • Human or international rights violations
  • Committing a crime
  • Organised crime, including involvement in organized criminal activity, people smuggling, or money laundering,
  • Misrepresentation, which includes providing false information or withholding information directly related to decisions made under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA)
  • Having an inadmissible family member
