At a press conference held on Wednesday, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said Canada has received 112,000 applications for asylum from people fleeing Ukraine.
MPs who serve on the committee believe these measures should also be available to Afghans who are still living in their Taliban-controlled homelands and refugees from other regions suffering from humanitarian crises, such as Yemen, Myanmar, and China.
As a result, Fraser said Canada remains "extremely committed" to helping Afghans escape.
A new global task force headed by Canada, aimed at bringing refugees to safe countries, was announced Wednesday by Grandi in Ottawa.
Canadian pilot program allows skilled refugees to apply for permanent residency through economic channels. The plan is to bring in more refugees to the country in addition to the ones already there.
By piloting the immigration program, some barriers were removed that ordinarily prevented refugees from obtaining permanent residency in Canada.
Immigration critic Jenny Kwan says the idea behind the pilot program is great, but she has some concerns. Among the program's features is a loan option to enable refugees to meet the economic requirements to live in Canada, but that loan option isn't yet available.
